Plays Selected for 2010-2011 Season
Following discussion of approximately 50 plays, with formal committee review of 37 plays, the Play Selection Committee has recommended, and the executive board has approved, the following plays for the 2010-2011 season. The plays are listed in the order they will be performed, but the precise dates have not yet been set. A more detailed schedule will be announced in the next newsletter.
Lend Me A Tenor, Comedy Sept. 17 - Oct. 3
World famous tenor Tito Morelli is scheduled to perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala season opener at the Cleveland Grand Opera. He is late, and through mishaps, he gets a double dose of tranquilizers along with 8
the booze he has consumed, and he passes out. An aspiring singer who works for the general manager thinks Morelli is dead, so he gets into the famous singer’s costume and performs the play admirably. Confusion ensues.
Witness for the Prosecution, Drama Oct. 29 - Nov. 14
Agatha Christie play that tells the story of a young married man who spends many evenings with a rich old woman. When she is found murdered, the naive young man is the chief suspect. The testimony of his wife is expected to result in an acquittal, but she is a shrew who damages his case and all but hangs him before a vindictive mystery woman appears with letters against the wife.
The Second Time Around, Comedy Feb. 11 - Feb. 27, 2011
Senior citizens Samuel Jonas and Laura Curtis, a widower and a widow, strike up a love affair. When they announce plans to live together without marrying so they can keep social security benefits they’d otherwise lose, their children hit the ceiling even though they were never close to their deceased parent and their own marriages leave a lot to be desired. The play concludes with an interesting and unexpected twist.
Twentieth Century, Comedy March 25 - April 10, 2011
Set in the 1930’s, the play features an egomaniacal Broadway director who boards the Twentieth Century, a train running from Chicago to New York, in order to try to enlist his former lover and ex-chorus girl to come do a show and help him avoid losing his theater. However, his former lover is now a famous Hollywood actress, traveling with her young boyfriend, and she has no interest in returning to Broadway, particularly not in a nearly bankrupt theater. The director pulls out all the stops, including feigning serious illness, to get her signature on a contract.
Write Me a Murder, Mystery/Drama May 6 - May 22, 2011
Set in a small English Country town, the Lord of the Manor dies, and leaves his estate to the oldest son, who is something of a playboy who ultimately sells off the manor and moves to Texas with an heiress. A shrewd, ruthless man originally from the town returns to buy the manor. His young wife is a would-be writer who takes writing lessons from the younger brother, and begins an affair with him, and the plot thickens.
